Maintaining good oral hygiene habits and visiting a dental hygienist regularly is the best way to ensure that tartar does not accumulate on your teeth. If you live in Kelowna, there are many qualified dental hygienists that can help you achieve your dental health goals.

What is tartar?

Tartar is a hardened build-up of bacteria and plaque that forms on teeth. It can appear as a yellow, brown, or gray discoloration on the surface of teeth, and is caused by a build-up of plaque that has hardened over time. Tartar can be difficult to remove and can cause tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems if not addressed in a timely manner. A visit to your local dental hygienist in Kelowna will help you understand how to avoid tartar buildup and identify the signs of it early on.

The bacteria and plaque present in tartar can damage the gums and eventually cause gingivitis or periodontitis, both of which can lead to tooth loss and other serious health issues. Fortunately, there are ways to help prevent tartar from forming in the first place, as well as treatments for when it does form.

What causes tartar?

Tartar is a yellow or brown substance that forms on the surface of your teeth. It is caused by a combination of leftover food particles, bacteria, and saliva that builds up on the teeth. Over time, this buildup will form a hard layer called tartar, which can be difficult to remove.

Tartar is especially prone to forming in areas around the gum line and along the edges of the teeth, as these areas are harder for your toothbrush to reach. Poor oral hygiene is the primary factor in developing tartar. Not brushing your teeth or not brushing them enough can create an ideal environment for bacteria to build up, leading to tartar.

Eating foods high in sugar or starch can also contribute to the formation of tartar. Saliva can also play a role in the formation of tartar, as some people have naturally more acidic saliva than others, which can lead to the formation of tartar more quickly.

Here are some additional tips to prevent tartar buildup:

1. Use an anti-tartar toothpaste: Many toothpastes on the market are designed specifically to help reduce the amount of tartar that builds up on your teeth. Look for a toothpaste that contains ingredients such as pyrophosphates, zinc citrate, and sodium hexametaphosphate.

2. Quit smoking: Smoking not only increases your risk of other oral health issues but can also make it harder for your body to fight off tartar. Quitting smoking is one of the best ways to ensure your mouth remains healthy.

Following these steps can help prevent tartar buildup and keep your teeth and gums healthy. Additionally, speak with your dentist if you’re experiencing any signs of periodontal disease such as swollen gums or persistent bad breath.
