If you are going to grow a beard while looking for inspiration among trends on the internet, first make sure that there is a particular style that is right for you. After that, be sure to take care of it properly and visit a trusted barber regularly.

First, though, let’s focus on the beard shape you’ll be aiming for. Just as not every hairstyle is going to work for you, beards aren’t one-size-fits-all for every guy.

Customize Your Beard to Fit the Shape of Your Face

Getting the right beard will help you figure out your face shape. You will need a tape measure, a pen, and a piece of paper.

Forehead: Measure and note the length from one brow crest to the other.

Cheekbones: Measure the distance between the most pointed ends of your cheekbones below the outer corners of your eyes. Make a note of the measurement.

Mandibular line: Measure the length from the tip of your chin to the point below your ear at the point where your jaw tilts upward. Multiply by two and note the jawline measurement on the chart.

Face Length: Measure and record from the center of your forehead hairline to the top of your chin.

Once you’ve taken the above measurements, mark which one is the largest and then compare your results to the seven main facial profiles.

Face shape and beard type

  • Oval

The length of the face is greater than the width of the cheekbones, and the forehead is larger than the jawline. The angle of the jaw is rounded rather than sharp. This is the most versatile shape. With an oval face, you can choose between different beard styles that other men may not have. This versatility comes from having both square and round features, which means that you don’t really have to cover anything up and work on visually giving your face a different shape with barbering tricks. All you need to focus on is taking care of the appearance of your beard. A classic choice will always work. If you are looking for one, go for a beard that is short on the sides and trimmed under the chin line, square on the jaw and with pronounced lines on the cheeks.

  • Rectangle

Face length is the biggest measurement. The forehead, cheekbones and jawline are similar in size. In this case, betting on a long, triangular or pointed chin will not be the best option. The key here will be to give your face some width. In order to achieve this, grow a shorter beard and a richer beard starting high up on the cheeks. This will prevent your face from looking too elongated. The fuller cheeks created by the beard give the impression of a slightly wider jaw which draws attention away from the length of your face.

  • Triangle

The jawline is larger than the cheekbones, which are larger than the forehead. Here your goal should be to draw attention away from your more prominent chin. A mustache with a short square chin or beard will work well for this. On the other hand, avoid too full and thick hair on the cheeks which will give an unwanted impression of an even wider jawline.

  • Round shape

The cheekbones and the length of the face are of similar dimension. They are larger than the forehead and jawline, which also have similar dimension. The angle of the jaw is soft and much less defined at the ends. This is where a triangular shape will work great. Choose a chin that is shorter on the cheeks and longer on the jowls.

  • Heart

The forehead is larger than the cheekbones and jawline. The chin is pointed. A beard that is too long will only reduce your face even more visually. Instead, opt for a designer beard on the sides. Leave most of your chin unbearded and grow a mustache to add depth and volume to your jawline.

  • Square

The dimensions are all fairly similar. The angle of the jaw is sharp rather than rounded. While a strong, square jaw is something many men would really give up a lot for, it does have its limitations in terms of beard selection. A full beard on the cheeks will only make your face look unnaturally broad. In this case, a good choice is to elongate it with a goatee style beard. This will also help to focus the eyes on other features of your face.

  • Diamond

The diamond face shape is widest at the cheekbones, with a narrow forehead and jawline that are approximately symmetrical in width. The chin is pointed. Opt for a beard, widen the cheeks and wider at the edge of the jawbone to even out the lower half of the face which will help you widen the cheeks and the edge of the jawbone to even out the lower half of the face. A long, pointy beard will not be a good choice here.
