In the 21st century, teeth whitening is becoming a trend of sorts. Many people, before opting for this type of procedure, first try to add whiteness to their teeth on their own. For example, by using tooth whitening products available in pharmacies or drugstores – various types of toothpastes, mouthwashes or whitening strips. However, which of them are actually worth using? And can there be negative effects of teeth whitening?
Before you opt for a teeth whitening procedure at the dentist’s office, you need to consider your genetics. Namely, keep in mind that the color of your teeth depends primarily on three factors. Firstly, from genetics, because already in childhood during the formation of teeth they have a certain color. Secondly – your habits, if any, also affect the color. For example, smoking, notorious drinking of coffee or tea, or bad tooth brushing habits, unfortunately, also affect the appearance of stains. And thirdly, age. As time goes by, teeth deteriorate more frequently and faster and their color definitely differs from white. It also happens that discoloration of teeth appears as a result of medication and due to inborn disorders in the structure of enamel.
There is a wide range of tooth whitening products available today. So before you finally decide to go to the dentist, you can try some safe options to whiten your teeth at home. Whitening pastes, whitening strips or even professional LED light whitening kits. Remember, whether you whiten your teeth at the dentist’s office or at home you need to follow the rules before and after whitening. The main thing is to follow a white diet. What do you eat? E.g. dairy products, fish, cereals such as white rice.
The teeth whitening procedure is performed by a dentist or a hygienist. It may take up to 2 hours, depending on the preparation used. Such a procedure consists of several stages, during which subsequent portions of the whitening preparation are applied and activated by the light of the lamp. Sometimes before the procedure the patient is advised to take a painkiller, e.g. paracetamol, as it will reduce tooth sensitivity, which may occur during bleaching. Remember that modern methods and delicate ingredients of the whitening agents make professional teeth whitening a completely safe method.
Teeth whitening methods at the dentist’s office include: laser whitening, overlay method and application of matte veneers. Each of them has its advantages and disadvantages. It is best to ask about them during a visit to the dentist, who after examining our teeth will advise the best method for us. Regardless of which method you decide on, before bleaching you must first visit a dentist to have tartar removed.
Prices for professional teeth whitening vary greatly and depend on, among other things, the method you choose, but also on where you live. Typically, these treatments are more expensive in larger cities. Prices for teeth whitening with laser and plasma lamp vary from 500 to 1000 zł. Whitening by means of trays costs on average from 400 to 800 zł. If we want to try to whiten teeth using strips available in drugstores, we have to reckon with the expense of a few dozen zlotys (you have to remember that whitening with strips must be repeated every few months).
